The Watermind Course! As an artist who loves working with oil, acrylic, and graphite ,i always approached watercolor in a way i felt in control of the medium, and I struggled to find true freedom in the process. The revelation came through Shyam’s work His paintings weren't simply of water.

I explored medium after medium, but watercolor held me longer than anything else. Maybe it’s the way water decides its own path, or how colours blend without asking permission. I still don’t fully understand why it pulls me, I just know it does.

Once just casually scrolling over the Instagram....I came accross a Reel where watching a hand holding brush ,spilling a big bowl of water over a sheet of paper and with a featherly soft touch , slowly yet quickly moving...a bit here and a bit there and Lo !!!! a beautiful painting appeared. There were no words ,no promotion,no preeching or boasting about ,that called me . Watching it over and over again lead me to join the watermind beginners course . Since past few years I was seeking to go back to that part of my childhood when I wished to have brushes ,palates ,tubes and paper sheets and a load of it around and just play and paint . Joining the course gave me that opportunity once again at the age of 59 years to explore that corner of heart which longed to spend the moments of being ME . While doing the practice I have realised that the moment I prepare my mind to create something, looking at some beautiful art work by someone and do exactly to get something...I often fail but whenever I let it happen, flow freely learn without expectations I enjoy it . Actually this feeling of lightness has helped me to work in a better way with children as being an educator almost 35 years ,I have learnt that the moment the children are free of the fear of failing, away from judgement and allowed to make mistakes, they fall in love of learning, getting immersed deeply. In the same way ,joining the water mind course twice has instilled a lot of patience and calm . I have also realised that tightened grip around the brush has loosened a lot ,the sharpness in the artwork is gradually softening down.... I think I feel assured that letting the self go with flow helps! Willing to explore further, learning and exploring, Thanks for everything Shyam!

Reflection on My Watercolor Journey Di Hu Art disappeared from our school curriculum in the 7th grade, and with it went my only structured encounter with creativity. COVID hit the world, created the room and boredom that encouraged me to pick up some paints and brushes. I tried ink, acrylic, and watercolors, and was instantly captivated by watercolor’s lightness—its unpredictability, its joy. Yet the path that followed was nothing like I had imagined. The unknown is unsettling for most of us—especially for those of us who grew up believing excellence and success follows a step-by-step map - bullet points, certificates or numbered ranks. We were taught to measure growth with a roadmap, rather than intuition. I thought I could learn art in the same way. How wrong I was. I was lost when I soon realized how quickly one can learn the theories of art, and how profoundly mysterious it is to become an artist. There is no roadmap. Art is not a course or a certificate, it is a long, solitary pilgrimage toward oneself. A friend of mine told me about Shyam on Instagram. His paintings felt as if they carried another kind of gravity—gentle, sacred, weightless. I remember thinking, I want to paint like that. And so, with a mixture of humility and determination, I joined Watermind’s two-month watercolor program in the fall of 2024. During those two months, I learned the techniques—wet-on-wet, wet-on-dry, brushwork, pigment, timing—but more importantly, I learned the quiet philosophy beneath Shyam’s practice: the meditative state from which his paintings emerge. A way of approaching watercolor with calmness, courage, curiosity, and a serenity that leaves no room for the fear of mistakes. It’s not because mistakes don’t exist; it’s because all mistakes are embraced and celebrated—they are all parts of the flow. Isn’t that life itself? We are never in complete control of the flow, but we adapt and use our brush gently to guide the water and the colors…waiting for the right moment to add more water or more pigment (or even salt!)…sometimes we wait too long, while other times we are not patient enough. But we learn along the way…and then, eventually, we wait again —for the painting to reveal what it has become. It often turns out to be different from what we wanted or expected, but just as beautiful, sometimes even more so. And always, undeniably, part of our journey. In my study room hang three small prints of Shyam’s paintings. I look at them during my breaks, letting my eyes rest on their quiet glow. I know I will never paint the way Shyam paints, because I am not him. I need to discover and become my own version of an artist. It will take time. I am only in the second year of my watercolor journey. But I am in no hurry. Emergence has its own pace. And who I am slowly growing into is worth every bit of patience I can offer.

The Watermind Course! As an artist who loves working with oil, acrylic, and graphite ,i always approached watercolor in a way i felt in control of the medium, and I struggled to find true freedom in the process. The revelation came through Shyam’s work His paintings weren't simply of water. They felt like they were made by water! A genuine reflection of the medium's essence. It was clear to me that this was not an artist commanding the medium, but one chosen by it. The water chooses Shyam! This compelled me toward the Watermind course. I dedicated myself fully to Watermind, and the experience has been completely transformative. Today, this course is far more than a skill set ,it is a lens.Shyam teaches how to honor the medium’s nature, to trust the flow, and to relinquish the need for absolute control. For artists seeking to transcend mere technique and truly commune with watercolor, this experience is essential. To be a part of the community he built has been truly wonderful, too This is my experience, from control to surrender!

My desire to paint with watercolor came quite suddenly — even I was surprised by it. I had never been interested in art, and I certainly wasn’t good at it. One day, I rescued an orphaned baby squirrel in our yard. I managed to feed her diluted milk with a dropper, and before long she became a member of our family. As my love for her grew, I wanted to express it somehow. So I bought all the tools for watercolor painting and simply began. I knew nothing about painting, but I just needed to capture Chippy’s cuteness, her mischievousness, and the love I felt for her. By painting every day, I naturally learned how to paint. I also picked up techniques from YouTube and Instagram. I enjoyed painting so much, but after some time I encountered difficulties. I had to face my own rigidity — my inability to surrender to the free movement of water — along with my fears and limitations. That’s when I realized it was just like a spiritual journey. My spiritual life and watercolor painting had become one.

I explored medium after medium, but watercolor held me longer than anything else. Maybe it’s the way water decides its own path, or how colours blend without asking permission. I still don’t fully understand why it pulls me, I just know it does. While I was sitting with that question, I found Shyam’s page on Instagram. His transparency both in art and in the way he shares knowledge just stopped me. It felt honest, unfiltered. That drew me deeper into exploring, not just painting. One thing shyam repeats is: we must surrender to watercolor; only then it shows its true magic. I remember the first time I actually felt that , the patience of waiting a little longer before letting the brush touch the wet paper. The timing is never “perfect,” yet there’s something beautiful in trying to sense it. I’m still learning, still missing the moment sometimes, but even that feels like part of the practice. Every brush stroke reminds me to slow down. To wait a little more. To witness what happens when I’m not controlling everything. Watercolor has become a small lesson in letting go and in trusting that something soft and unexpected can appear if I simply stay with it. Watercolor changed how I react to things. Earlier I wanted clear shapes, clear answers. Now I’m learning to appreciate the in-betweens, the moments when colour is still moving, still settling. It made me more open to surprises, to mistakes, to things taking their own direction.

Frequently asked questions
General Philosophy
What is the core philosophy of Watermind?
Watermind is a practice that uses art as a tool for a journey inward. It is founded on the principle that the mindful process of creating—learning to see clearly, surrender to the medium, and embrace spontaneity—is a direct path to accessing your natural state of creative flow and self-awareness. The tagline, “flow inward,” encapsulates this journey.
Do I need prior experience in art or meditation?
No prior experience is needed. The journey is designed to meet you where you are. We begin with the fundamentals of perception and mark-making, guiding both your hand and your awareness with equal care. All you need is a willingness to explore.
What makes Watermind different from other art courses?
While we teach comprehensive watercolor technique, our primary focus is on cultivating the mindset of the artist. Our curriculum integrates mindfulness practices, neuroscience-based learning, and philosophical inquiry into every module. The goal is not just a painting, but a more fluid, aware, and creative way of being.
